In our busy lives, we often focus on external achievements and daily responsibilities, sometimes neglecting the importance of nurturing our personal well-being and growth. The past two months I’ve incorporated small changes into my life to regain a sense of balance. By integrating a few key habits into my routine, I’ve been able to create a more enriching life. Here are four wellness practices to focus on this month: investing in personal growth, journaling or finding creative outlets, setting meaningful goals, and planning events to look forward to.
1. Invest Time in Personal Growth
Personal growth is the process of improving your skills, mindset, and overall sense of self. It’s an ongoing journey that can lead to a deeper understanding of your strengths, weaknesses, and desires. Investing time in your personal growth allows you to become the best version of yourself, both in your personal life and your professional interests.
Personal growth often involves stepping out of your comfort zone, that’s where true transformation happens. I recently pushed myself out of my comfort zone and presented at one of our large company meetings. I’ve presented more times in my career than I can count but always to smaller groups. This was companywide. I felt good about my accomplishment, and proceeded to create a 1-year career plan that I don’t think I would have been confident enough to complete prior to the presentation. Whether it’s developing a new skill, confronting fears, or exploring new perspectives, the effort you put into growing as a person will enhance your overall well-being and sense of accomplishment.

2. Journal or Find a Creative Outlet
Creativity is a powerful tool for emotional release, personal expression, and mental clarity. One of the simplest and most accessible ways to tap into your creativity is through journaling. Writing allows you to process your thoughts, reflect on your experiences, and gain insights into your emotions. Over the years I have tried journalling on and off and lost focus after a couple days. I discovered that my lack of commitment was due to the process being too structured and formal. It was when I used an old notebook, left over from my girl’s elementary school days, and colored pens that I could not only make the task fun but stick to it.
If journaling isn’t your thing, try other creative outlets like painting, drawing, photography, or even cooking. The goal is to engage in activities that allow you to express yourself freely and joyfully. Engaging in creative endeavors can reduce stress, improve mental health, and boost your mood.
3. Set Goals That Are Important to You
Setting goals is an essential part of creating a fulfilling life. However, it’s important to focus on goals that are aligned with your values and passions, rather than just external expectations or societal pressures. When your goals are meaningful to you, they provide motivation, purpose, and direction in life. Sometimes, a goal that has been delayed due to external factors can resurface at the perfect moment. For me, developing a career plan and gaining the confidence to pursue it aligned with my children growing older and becoming more independent.
Goals don’t just have to be related to career or physical health — they can be about improving relationships, learning new skills, or personal development. Be sure to celebrate your wins along the way, no matter how small. This reinforces the positive habits and mindset necessary for achieving your larger aspirations.

4. Plan Events to Look Forward To
Life can sometimes feel routine, with responsibilities and obligations filling up most of our time. One way to cultivate joy and excitement is by planning events or activities that you can look forward to. Whether it’s a weekend getaway, a family gathering, a new hobby you want to try, or a simple outing with friends, having something to look forward to can bring a sense of anticipation and happiness into your life.
Wellness is about nurturing every aspect of your life; personal growth, emotional expression, meaningful goals, and moments of joy. By investing in your growth, finding creative outlets, setting goals that matter, and planning events to look forward to, you create a life full of purpose, happiness, and balance.
Over the past three months, I’ve learned to start small, stay committed to healthy habits, and forgive myself if I stray from my goals temporarily. I’ve decided not to give up, and along the way, I’ve noticed positive changes in my overall health and wellness.
