There are two days of the year when I get to be all-powerful – My birthday and Mother’s Day. As the first of my days approaches, I dream big about all the things I could use my powers for, but I inevitably always settle on plant shopping. Over the years it’s gradually become a tradition to pack up the family and head out after brunch to the local greenhouses in search of the annuals that will fill the yard with colour for the season.
Like any good gardener, I always have a list of what I need to fill the standing pots around the yard, but then each child also gets to pick out a bedding plant as their gift for me. This is really a treat for them as the flowers become theirs to nurture, and they compete throughout the summer to see whose pick grows taller, more beautifully, and was generally all around just a better gift for mom.
We try to choose a different local greenhouse every year and some years visit more than one.
A few of our Regina favourites that are open this time of year include:
12440 South Service Rd., just west of Regina on the Highway 1 service road
132 Broad Street North, Regina
Highway 6, just south of Regina near the old drive-in location
No matter how many greenhouses they have to choose from, my kids all always pick petunias. There’s just something about the colours that gets them every time. Maybe this year I’ll use my powers to get something more exotic. But probably not. We are a family that likes our traditions, and why mess with that?
