Planning a Great Staycation

February 1, 2023

Over the last few weeks many people have been impacted by countless flight cancellations. Not only do those affected have to deal with the inconvenience of unplanned changes, there’s also the headache that comes with having to deal with the airlines to be rescheduled or refunded.

If you or someone you know had their trip cancelled and aren’t able to reschedule, we have an alternative! Keep the excitement alive by planning a stay-cation! Change up your routine while staying at home or get behind the wheel instead of a stranger with a fully reclined seat and visit one of these amazing getaways right here in our province!

We don’t have the ocean or tropical forests, but Saskatchewan is home to some of the most beautiful country Canada has to offer. If you’ve never tried a winter vacation, now is a great time to book at one of the amazing choices below:

If travel is not an option, not to worry! Read on for a few ideas to diverge from your normal and make your stay-cation new and exciting!

  • Book a hotel room – just because you aren’t jet-setting to a popular destination doesn’t mean you can’t treat yourself and family, significant other, friends, etc. to a fun night where you don’t have to worry about cooking or making the beds! To really get the most out of your hotel experience, book at a location with a pool/waterslide and hot tub or a spa.
  • Plan a full day and night event – whether you were supposed to travel with family or friends, make a point of getting together close to home for more than a quick visit. Go for brunch, take part in an afternoon activity, book a new or favourite restaurant for supper then go for a few drinks. If you have kids, get a sitter or order in and keep the night rolling at someone’s house where the kids can play and you don’t have to worry as much about bedtimes!
  • Try something new – vacation gives us opportunities to try new things that we don’t always have time for at home or can’t do based on location, like surfing or authentic cuisine. Use your stay-cation to finally try that class you’ve been thinking about or make a reservation at the restaurant you’ve been dying to try. Can’t get in on short notice, or nothing available during your time off? Book when it works and let yourself take the time to go, you deserve it!
  • Stick to your vacation habits – think of something you always do leading up to or on vacation. Maybe you choose a new book to read, or get new shoes for your vacation adventures. Whatever it is, DO IT. Take some of the little things that bring added joy to your vacation and treat yourself to them even if it’s not your typical holiday.

Whether you’re able to reschedule a different type of vacation or you’re staying at home, remember what the goal of your vacation is. From quality family time to celebrating a milestone or success or a fresh start, continue to make it the focus of your time off. By doing this, no matter where you are you’ll feel more satisfied with your vacation even if it didn’t go the way you originally planned.
