Drive-in theaters combine the joy of watching movies with the novelty of being outdoors. If you’re like me, they also evoke a sense of nostalgia, taking me back to lazy summer nights with all of us kids piled into our family car – spilling popcorn everywhere! We are lucky in Saskatchewan, to still have several drive-ins operating that allow us to look forward to a fun night out this summer.
Moonlight Movies – Pilot Butte, SK
Saskatchewan’s newest permanent screen drive-in, these hearty business owners opened in the summer of 2020 and claim to have the best popcorn in Regina! Dogs are allowed on leash and the screen is permanent which means movies will play in every kind of weather.
Twilite Drive-In – Wolseley, SK
The owners usually allow you to camp overnight if you can’t make the drive back home, but there is a cozy campground in Wolseley as well if you prefer. Be sure to arrive early enough for the pre-show cartoons and the owner’s signature “It’s Show, Show, Showtime!” announcement.
Salty Cinema Drive-In at Manitou Beach – Watrous, SK
Back this year with a new name, this screen is conveniently located close to a charming campground and a hotel with a spa, making it a great addition to a weekend away at Little Manitou Lake.
Prairie Dog Drive-In Theatre – Carlyle, SK
This one offers a similar getaway experience close to the suite of attractions that make up Moose Mountain provincial park. We have even been known to grab a cabin for the weekend.
Clearwater Drive-In Theatre – Kyle, SK
There’s nothing like the view of the stars you’ll get at this theatre if you pause to look beyond the screen. Activities at nearby Saskatchewan Landing can easily round out a weekend for those who want to make the trip last a little longer.
The best part of going to the drive-in? Movie popcorn with buttery topping available at most locations.
