Top Christmas Movies for the Holiday Season

Christmas is a time of the year where the nostalgia runs deep. It’s the time for quirky (but fun) family traditions, recipes passed down through generations, and of course reminiscing on the memories made in years past.

Regardless of past holiday rituals, I think there’s always room to create new memories. How about a new tradition? A Christmas movie marathon is just what the family needs. With the 2020 year coming to a close (phew), I think we all need a little extra cheer.

That’s why we rounded up Directwest’s Marketing team to share their top Christmas movies with the masses. With a great mix of classics, kid-friendly blockbusters and gut-busting comedies, these suggestions will undoubtedly be crowd pleasers!  

In no particular ranking, here’s our top fav movies for the holidays:

How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (1966 Cartoon Version)

  • Sarah: “The nostalgia I feel watching this movie takes me back to being little and sitting with my brother and sister in our PJ’s by the Christmas tree.”

Scrooged (1988)

  • Dave: “Great comedic spin on a classic “A Christmas Carol”. And who doesn’t like Bill Murray?!”

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer (1964)

  • Andrew: “A heart-warming celebration of difference.”

The Holiday (2006)

  • Jenna: “I love this movie even more right now because it’s like taking a holiday when we’re technically not able to take a holiday!”

Home Alone (1990)

  • Karen: “What’s not to love about the all-star cast and the crazy ways Kevin outdoes the burglars!”

Elf (2003)

  • Sarah: “When I think of this movie all I hear is my girls laughing so hard at the things Buddy does. Their laughing makes me laugh.”

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989)

  • Drew & Allan agree: “We all have a Cousin Eddie in our life.”
  • Clay: “I’ve seen it more than a dozen times but I notice something new every time. I also feel like I can relate with Clarke Griswold in trying to host large multi family Christmas parties and all of the “fun” that goes with that.”  

How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)

  • Danny: “Perfect mix of the holiday spirit with some good humour mixed in.”

Die Hard (1988)

  • Ashley: “I know, I know. Maybe not traditional, but this action-filled film is a classic!”

There we have it. I’d say that’s a pretty great start to your marathon! Don’t forget to pick up your popcorn, treats, and sweets! It’s one of the best parts of a movie, if I do say so myself. I’d also recommend snuggling up in your fav Christmas-themed PJ’s with a ton of cozy blankets! And hey, if you’re in it for the long haul, maybe it’s a good time to upgrade the “theatre” – I’m sure pops would be pleased with a new TV from Santa!
